For my first blog post the topic on my mind happens to be politics. This won't be the norm but recent elections have conjured up lots of mental anguish regarding lack of true community thinking. Most of what I see in politics is personal agendas, in particular the desire to matter as an individual and to be re-elected at seemingly all costs. To bring this piece to a simple and direct opinion piece my current gripe is with respect to how all the parties seem to act in their marketing campaigns. Everything I have seen leading up to the recent elections focused on how terrible the other party was. There was a little, they promised this but didn't deliver (which is somewhat relevant and necessary), however most was focused on personal/party defamation. Now what purpose does this have in the scheme of things. How is that of any benefit to the community. In fact, use of funding for such campaigns, which comes from a mix of public and private funds, seems a ridiculous waste. Should not we expect more from our democracy. Any public funds that are funneled into the campaign surely could easily be redirected to undelivered promises. And 'donations', where are these coming from. Corporations who ultimately want to make a profit, not community benefit. So, the question is what are they getting for the funding they provide. Maybe this is where the smear campaign trail begins. An expectation to gain benefit from a political donation, at all costs. Who are these corporations: banks, consultants, unions, mining, gambling. What do you think these types of organisations want for their donation, are these organisations known for their selflessness. Profits are king, self interest if rife, but shouldnt we expect better from the leaders of our country and communities.
So what do i want to see:
- commendations of another party or candidate on how well they performed for their constituent
- how their 'competitor' went above and beyond and the efforts they made to ensure the greater good was delivered
- what areas they can continue to work with the other party to improve
- other ideas and concepts that may have been overlooked or under delivered that they will enact
Or really simply, some positivity, treat others how you would like to be treated, lead by example, be the change you wish to see, do what is right not what is popular, words are heard actions are seen, integrity is doing what is right when no one is looking.
There is so much negativity injected into our daily lives, some self inflicted but most externally generated. Imagine if our public servants treated us and their collegues with some respect rather than distain.
What do you want to see. Do you enjoy the excitement and drama of the current approach or would you like me like to see change?
